Does religion cover all beliefs?
What is the actual way every day, ordinary people define religion?

Re: Does religion cover all beliefs?
wow breezey ,thats a tough one !!
i would say it varies between each person, religion, and culture .
personally religion does not play a role in my everyday life, but hardly a day goes by that i don't see something that leaves me in awe of the wonders of creation, makes me feel humble and small, yet perfectly fitting into the place i'm meant to be.

Re: Does religion cover all beliefs?
I just wonder if religion is supposed to cover different types of religions or if it covers those who don't have a religion too.
Maybe I should start by looking up the actual definition of religion. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Roxanna, I too find things daily that still fill me with wonder and awe. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Could a persons beliefs be their religion? Hmmm...

Re: Does religion cover all beliefs?
Given the below definitions of religion I would say
YES, it covers any belief system.
re·li·gion
–noun 1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.
4. the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion.
5. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.
6. something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice.
7. religions, Archaic . religious rites.
8. Archaic . strict faithfulness; devotion: a religion to one's vow.
##
For myself; whether something is or is not definable as a person's religion
would depend on more that lip sevice.
As to how anyone - much less ALL 'ordinary people'
(? is there such a thing?) [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I dunno; I haven't any idea.
EDIT -
(Personally - and if it had been there at the same time
or before - Rock 'n' Roll might be my religion.
Fortunately, for me, Christianity predates R'n'R - some.)
Everything from "tradional" religion to diet and excercise can be -
and no doubt has been - defined as a religion.
Bless their little hearts. I am for ANYTHING!! that precludes
violence and hatred.
After all, I believe it is all the same God.
Anyone watch "saving Grace" - BTW??

Ja'aj, thank you. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
From what I understand of that definition, religion is a group of people believing the same things and is something one truly believes in and follows.
So... a group of people who don't believe in God and all follow and believe the same, is still a religion. That is how I am understanding it.

Re: Does religion cover all beliefs?
Roxanna, I hadn't given that a thought until now. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I am not sure how Atheists see it... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Does religion cover all beliefs?
my opinion:
Atheism is a NON-belief.
Atheists would have to have "something/someone"
to believe IN.
Ergo; any atheist I've ever known would have to count
him/herself as the "believed in"...
and 1 person does not constitute a religion per the definition.
Also, Atheists would seem to be anti the very word.
Lastly, what they believe -or don't believe is none of my business. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
EDIT:
"So... a group
of people who don't believe in God and all follow and believe the same,
is still a religion. That is how I am understanding it."
No. Each atheist is an individual not a group.
