ARIZONA WATER TANK :: Comments
Water itself has no smell, but I suppose they could smell bacteria in the water, or their byproducts.
Really? I know they know somehow, because
I've been on horseback in the desert and the
horse INSISTwe go his way; and he went right to water.
Also cattle will do that.

Well, any biological matter in the water may give off an odor as they break down. Leaves, branches, fish, insects, etc.
I certainly have been near lakes and bays that have a distinctive aroma.

True. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
But those we can smell; I'm talking about
the ones we can't. For whatever reason,
the little cuties have found that tank, haven't they?

Well, seeing how there are nearby trees, there very well may be leaves that have fallen into and broken down in the water. The water may also contain a few bird droppings; also, birds and other small animals may have bathed in it.
Plus, since it is a metal tank, that may have reacted with the water as well. Pure water, by itself, has no taste and no smell, but I would venture to guess that there's no such thing as 100% pure water in nature, at least above ground. In aquifers and underground springs, perhaps, but even then it would generally contain some mineral content.

This was worth seeing this morning and has put a smile on my face. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
So cool to see all those animals showing up for water!
By golly! I do believe Tater is right! Many animals rely on plants for their water and the smell is probably what draws them to the water.
