As Internet veterans know, there's only one place to go for debunking or confirming the latest bit of rumor that just came into your e-mail box: Snopes.com, where 300,000 people a day drop in to find out if indeed Bill Gates is sending out free laptops if President Obama is a Muslim or if Mikey from the Life commercials really died.

I find it especially useful when an email claims that it was checked on Snopes. It seems that more often than not, when I try to verify something like that, Snopes proves them wrong rather than correct. I suppose that the intention is to have people assume that the email is being truthful, so they don't bother checking for themselves!

I don't even bother with those emails anymore. If I really want to know.. I will check, but have stopped caring about all the crap sent to me. Most of it is wrong or only half right.

That one really pisses me off... I got one like
that, forwarded from someone I trust -
(but not her email,just one she'd forwarded)
and THEN... I got the same email about a year and a half later!

Now , like Bree says, I mostly just delete the things.

According to Snopes - and their dates - some of these
have been circulating almost since the internet has existed.

I am glad that Snopes exists...
(and one other one - damned if I can ever remember their name!)
They keep me from panicking about nonsense.
