Okay... to be serious for a minute... why aren't illegal immigrants going elsewhere, since jobs are getting so scarce here?

There is no shortage of jobs for farm laborers paying 3 or 4 dollars an hour.

I don't want to sound mean, but I do believe they are doing other jobs too.

I went to a restaurant that has a buffet style deal. All you want for one price... something I can't afford very often and really wanted steak!!.

A Mexican was at the grill where steak is usually served. I tried asking for beef steak and asking what kind of steak he was making. He kept repeating.. "pork steak", no matter what I said or asked and just smiled away.

I really wonder about that!

Yes, there a lot of immigrants working in restaurants as well, mostly under the table, for less pay than they would have to get legally.

I think the serious part is this was all based on things that are happening.

Roxanna, there is a song that says "take the money and run". That is what many businesses are doing. I think people should boycott their asses until they can honestly say... MADE in the U.S.A.

Really? Do you have any contacts where we are?
Because - (no deductions, etc) m son, my roommates and
I would LOVE to find someone -or several someones who would
agree to do that....
ME - because we need the money and "under the table" would
save me a ton of (despised) paperwork; - both of my roommates
because they are unemployed and UNHAPPY about it -
they have lots of previous experience -but no jobs...

My son Greg, because he is ill and "under the table" would give us
income that
wouldn't jeopardize his medical through the County.

He has no income - none - not employment and not SSI / SSD -

BUT, SS / SS-Disability /SS-Supplemental income
(- I can't get Supplemental Income either!) -
doesn't allow for overage dependent relatives - not even for medically
"unable to care for self" - types.
But, Hey! - when I had an income - and was paying INCOME TAX -
the I.R.S. accepted my son as my dependent - and they DIDN'T REQUIRE
PROOF of anything! - they just wanted to know his SSN.

(HOWEVER...he couldn't be carried on my health insurance because he

So... - "much less than they would have to get - legally" ?
That would round out to about the same after FICA and STATE taxes -
(here - state taxes are killers! because they're sooo high!)

PLUS, here, restaurant employees, hotel service, wait-staff,
valet service, etc. (among others) are not included / protected /
covered / whatever by the "minimum wage" laws - AND they/we
wouldn't have to report the TIPS.

BTW...
Tips are the reason the minimum wage law doesn't apply
to those kinds of jobs - at least, not here.
(Those employees would have a fit - and STRIKE! if they had to
settle for that kind of pay ( employed - complete with FICA, etc.)
- AND tips as reportable income anyway.
Here, many, many bar/nightclubs/hotels, etc. do not pay a wage
- of any kind - their employees work for TIPS ONLY and the
competition for those jobs is FIERCE.

(Also - there is no "onus" applied to "servants"/service jobs /
"menials" / etc here!)
Here, that kind of job makes those employees/independent
contractors very! comfortable.
VERY.
Here the almighty dollar/ bank account-as-status-symbol
has long-since put paid to that kind of snobbery.

Here, until more recently, anyone over 19 didn't qualify for state medical if they were single and had no children.. even if they had no income.. I think they changed some of the guidelines and now adults can get state medical, even with no underaged children.

Paid under the table... I haven't had that, but know others who have. Some people are real smooth talkers and manage to get that. Other times, the employer saves more than just what taxes would take. Fact is, some people will work for half of what an employer will normally pay...fathers who want to avoid child support is one good example.

It TOOK ME...and Greg... YEARS!! (literally!) to get him qualified.
YEARS.
His monthly medication alone (never mind doctors' visits, lab test, etc.)
runs almost Two Thousand Dollars A Month.
Or it did almost 7 years ago.

FINALLY, someone put me in touch with a Foundation (non-profit)
and EVENTUALLY (when he coldn't work! at ALL any more)
that Foundation (he had to be employed for them to help)
communicated with ACCCHS. (Bullied them severely!)

civilized country has a better healthCARE plan for it's citizens.
We have (expensive!) Health INSURANCE - (some of us)

as for industry, to much of it is going oversees here to, and i no longer consider them to be aussie products, also to many businesess are taken over by multynational companies , who run the little guys out of busines and take away the profits, also every time a good busines is taken over, the standards drop and the prices rise.
jaaj,we do have health care for everybody, but it's getting worse and worse, long periods of time waiting for surgery,reports of people dying whilst on the waiting list to long.funding cut to the bone, so to speak, can't help but wonder where it will all end .

than annoying. It will, I think get much much worse.
It's like the Real Estate market... I don't know anything
about the stock market but I do know about sound lending
practices and I've lived here WAAAY long-enough to know
that the market had gone from "usual" (value for dollar)
( perhaps a bit inflated in another location, but not for "here".

"We" have a very desirable location here (Arizona) and it holds

money here; and EVERYONE comes here - to the Southwest

Or so it seems. They make their money; (a lot or a little) in the
central and Eastern cities.
But - when they retire, they leave the cold! - for a climate they
can enjoy the things they want to do - golf, swim, boat, fish

The selling prices of homes just got higher - and eventually
(for the last 7-10 years!) it was ABSURD to a person looking on.
For the last 2 years!- before everything tanked - I kept saying

loans to people who did. not. qualify.
( ie; NO WAY! could they afford to make those payments.)

NOW - not only is that true - (even if they have jobs) at all,
but the bottom has dropped out of their over-priced
(and mortgaged!) property.
They can't recoup by selling (no one can buy) -
and CERTAINLY! not at a price to cover what they owe.
And of course - the good ol' G.O.P. - and their buddies -
(the BANKS) don't want to HELP... what would happen to their
PROFIT?

(The buyers were certainly to blame)
BUT MOSTLY! the lenders are at fault. It is their JOB to calculate
the risk.
There are - (or certainly WERE, anyway!) LAWS about over-extending
a borrower.
I know - for an absolute FACT! that on the back! of EVERY loan
application - there is a form for figurng the customer's BUDGET.

The prospective lender fills in the facts -
and does the math.

If they borrower can't make the PAYMENT -
The lender DOESN'T MAKE MAKE THE LOAN.
It seemed simple when I was doing it.
Or at least that's the way it used to work.

Until our immediately-previous administration practiced
their sleight-of-hand : "Watch THIS hand -OVER HERE -
(war plus the threat of more terrorism) and DON'T PAY ANY
ATTENTION to what this other hand is doing over here.
Which was bankrupting our own country! and every
other country (our friends and allies) along with us.

Everything is now just-about impossible for mere "folks",
and the even-poorer are blitzed.
The middle class is shell-shocked - and the less-than-middle-class
is just ... out of the game.
Certainly with the central plank of the previous regime
("We've got ours - screw you") - the poor and middle classes
didn't count - and now they count for even less.
It is snowballing down hill while picking up speed -
and more areas of disaster.
Health 'care' has long been a scary "needs-to-be-dealt-with"
issue - now it's a downhill locomotive.
Our lack of concern / largess / 'let them eat cake' attitude has turned
- it is back to bite us -hard! - on our collective butts.

We can NOT keep feeding everyone; we are out ! of food.

exactly ,jaaj, they seem to forget that people need somewhere to live and they need WATER !! (never mind the rest of it) although some parts of the country have floods ,much of it has resrictions, including here,there have been some excellent solutions put forward , but seems the only thing they;ve come up with is desalination ,and the salt dumped back in the ocean , ok .it came from there in the first place, but there is a lot of water taken out, our gulf is rather shallow, it's not the best idea !!it will become briny over time , nobody seems to care about that,and the effect it will have on the environment. then there is the ''mighty murrey''upstream the water wasted on cotton and rice !!!! , a major source of water for sa, is hardly a trickle at the end of it. ofcourse we wont mention wild life !! we are loosing it at an alarming rate ,where there were thousands of water bird, now hardly a few. i so hate what is happening here !! looks like you mob have just as many probs, maybe different ones, but i think the whole world is in an equally bad state.
