A simple question...what are you doing now that spring is here?

For those not seeing spring...what time of year is it for you and what are you up to?

I have been planting lots of flowers in our front yard garden. Mostly annuals so far, like petunias and pansies, marigolds, celosia, vincas, snapdragons and dianthus. I also want to get some zinnias, coleus, portulaca, brown eyed susans, coneflowers and impatiens.

That's quite a list! For flowers, I haven't planted anything outside and most of it comes back without any help from me. I did plant calendula flowers because I use them for soap making and tea...

Cone flowers? Echinacea?
You have mentioned some I don't know or may know by different names.
My indoors look like a greenhouse! lol Corn, peas, cucumbers, parsley, peppers and tomatoes, pumpkins, squash and whatnot! I love seeing it all! lol The flowers are finally looking good outside!

Yes, coneflowers are echinacea (Often purple coneflowers). And portulaca is moss rose, celosia is also known as cock's comb. Brown eyed susans are also known as rudbeckia.

I will try to share some pics once the garden fills out a bit.

Do you have any lavender for soap making?

I have echinacea in my vegetable garden and they come back every year..nice, neat row of them. smile2

The big, round planter is my fairy garden gone wild. lol I brought it inside when it got too cold to keep it outside. The tall plant is a tomato plant from last year. It now has blossoms and is outdoors waiting to be pollinated. lol

There are a lot of different species/varieties of lavender. Some of them are perennials. Lavender is known for its fragrance and is often used in soaps, potpourri, and the like.

I've got some "before" pictures, but it might take a while to figure out how to upload them since it's been a while. I want to take new pics every week or so, to show the progress the flowers are making.

Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out who or what is eating the marigolds.

I found out you can upload all pictures at one time! lol Kind of sad that the person supposedly running this doesn't know much!
As for those marigolds...not sure, but something sure liked the echinacea flowers..just the leaves first growing! And I believe a chipmunk was digging up my corn plants!

When I click on the icon for "host an image", I get the option to post files or URL. Since we may not see all things the same, my "host an image" icon is in the second row of options, first one in line. A square with a smaller square in the right, bottom corner. When you choose files, you add as many as you have and then click to add all.

The Dusty Miller somehow made it through the winter, even though it's considered an annual here, and the Hostas are a perennial, but everything else was planted within the last week or so. We have had extremes from the 90's to to the low 40's since they've been planted, and have had everything from torrential rains to dry heat. I've been trying my best to give the plants what they need, but it's been rough.

Well, now that it's been a month, I think I need to take some more pictures, because when I see them every day, I don't notice much of a difference. But when I look at the photos from a month ago, I see a huge improvement!

They are definitely filling in quite nicely; so much so that I can't wait to see what they look like in another month from now.

I will try to take some more pics and post them in the next couple of days.

I was gone for four days and my gardens filled in too. lol
How much time did it take to plant all of that? Shocked

About a month.

There's roughly 500 plants. Figure about 2 hours a day times 12 days or so, plus weeding and watering, etc.

I would estimate that it took at least 60 hours overall, not counting the time it took to plan, shop, transplant, etc...

Hi Breezey and Tater.. It has been far too long since I popped in to say G'day.
It is the tail end of Winter here... and Spring is a month and a half away. We haven't had near enough rain and the days have been quite mild.. but the nights are icy.
Our garden is looking a bit bedraggled but I can see signs of Spring. Blossom trees are budding up and the roses are starting to shoot new growth already. Your gardens are looking lovely. And the pics of where you stayed looks beautiful Breezey. Why won't you go back there again?

I've just been hanging in there. I do have updated photos of my flower garden that show how well the garden has progressed; I will try to post them soon.

Meanwhile, my mom is in the hospital after fracturing a vertebrae from a fall. (While she was leaving the house, a gust of wind blew the storm door back into her and pushed her back into the doorway). She's been in the hospital since Tuesday, but she will be going to a rehab in the next few days. Not sure how long she will be there, but I imagine it will be for at least a couple of weeks. The good news is that it's a non-displaced fracture, so it could have been worse.

I did end up doing the cooking. I did all the cooking for Thanksgiving dinner. An 18 pound bird, stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, corn, carrots, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, pearl onions with white sauce...

I did some of the main things and others did extras. I had turkey and a small ham, potatoes and yams, pumpkin pie, my home made stuffing from my home made bread and whatever. Others brought green bean casserole, another ham, cheese cake...It was a good meal, but I didn't do it all alone.

Considering that I cooked more than enough for 12 people, and only 8 showed up, yet there were still hardly any leftovers, I think it turned out okay. Of course, I didn't use homemade bread for my stuffing, and I only made the mashed potatoes at the last minute, when people who had told my mom that sweet potatoes would be fine, kindly informed us that they and their children didn't like sweet potatoes and only ate mashed potatoes...

I got a 7 day weekend...long story.

Funny thing is, my mom kept telling me how some people didn't like this, and some people didn't like that, and I kept telling her that if they didn't like it, they didn't have to eat it...
That's why I made 3 different veggies and 3 different starches...
