Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov (Russian: Василий Александрович Архипов) (30 January 1926 – 19 August 1998) was a Soviet Navy officer who prevented a nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Only Arkhipov, as Flotilla commander and second-in-command of the nuclear-armed submarine B-59, refused to authorize the captain's use of nuclear torpedos against the United States Navy, a decision requiring the agreement of all three senior officers aboard. In 2002 Thomas Blanton, who was then director of the National Security Archive, said that "a guy called Vasili Arkhipov saved the world".[1]

I have read that we were a lot closer to nuclear  war than anyone realized at the time, but I hadn't read that story before.

I just recently read 'In Retrospect', which was basically Robert McNamara's memoir, which was mainly about his experience as Secretary of Defense under Kennedy and Johnson. While mainly about decisions made in reference to the Vietnam war, also covered events such as the Cuban missile crisis. Although I don't agree with everything he wrote (or did), I found it quite interesting as well as enlightening.

When I think about people at war, bombs, weapons... all that destruction and lives... I really do get an upset stomach. To think people find nuclear weapons even better...
I will never understand people and what makes them fight over things in ways that cause such harm.

Civilization, I think, leads from our higher instincts; while war comes from our baser motives. War is the opposite of civility. Most, if not all wars are the end result of greed, pride, envy, gluttony, wrath, and even lust. Sound familiar? Should we include sloth as well?

Do we know of any animals... dogs, cats, horses, lions, hippos, etc... that will go to such extremes to invent all those things to destroy and then attack?
I just get a real kick out of how many claim humans are well above other animals...(yet can be worse than them).

We have the capacity to rise above our animalistic instincts, but not always the will or desire.
