Apparently the Michelin Man was called Bibendum. He was white because in those days carbon wasn't added to the rubber!

I've no idea of the significance of the name, but that's the French for you (when they came to name Concorde they couldn't even agree on the spelling!).

So, carbon makes the rubber harder, so that it doesn't wear as fast? I thought I might have heard that on a show on the Discovery Channel, or one of the other informative channels, before they went to all reality, all the time.
