What's Your Excuse?

I have jury duty tomorrow.
What's a good excuse, to get out of it?
(Don't worry ... I'm gonna show up and "do my duty.")

Ah. Lucky you. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I find that here no excuse is necessary - just ignore the thing.
No consequence of any kind is known to occur.
I (almost) always respond - and I (almost) always go.
HOWEVER ... on SEVERAL separate occasions I , or Greg, or my Dad, etc.
... have not responded for a variety of reasons - usually not being at
home for the duration and not seeing the fool thing.
(People do go on vacations, etc.) I flat-out forgot one.
All of which resulted in ZIP response to the "no-response".
I did call (stupid - STUPID! thing to have done!) when my Dad was
very ill... to explain that: As he had Alzheimer's (!!) it seemed inadvisable
that he appear.
I will spare you the "chat" that followed.
Then... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I spoke with the SUPERVISOR... and she sent a FORM! to Dad's
neurologist.
(Which lead me to gather that it was NOT an unheard-of occurrence)
The designated person in the doctor's office filled out the form
and Dad was removed for the "potential" pool.
Dear God. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
So, Jack... how FAR is this "Courthouse" from where you live?

I don't know if there are too many good excuses they will accept. It is easier to be dismissed for being WRONG for the case... a truck driver turned down because it's about a truck driver... things like that. I wish you loads of fun with that... not really fun, is it? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The county seat (Hillsboro) is about 20 miles down the road.
I would say "as the crow flies" ...
but I'll say "as the bunny hops.")

I guess that's not too far... how's the parking when you get there?

Have not been there in several years.
Guess I'll find out tomorrow morning.
Have to be there at 9:00 AM.

I did get one last month, and I noticed several things. One was that they gave you 5 days to reply; what if you were on vacation? Another thing is that they ask if you've ever been convicted of a crime punishable by a year or more in prison; it doesn't ask by who, where, or if you actually served any time. And another strange question they ask is whether you can read or write; how can they expect you to respond if you can't?

Yes, but you still have to SHOW UP - every day.
If I have to GO anyway, I'd just as soon serve on a jury, myself.
Otherwise, it's most of a day shot and it's BOOORING.

I'd rather be sent home, unuseable! lol
I'd rather not be expected to decide someone's guilt or innocence..
I'm baaaaack!
Lock the doors and put-out the lights!
Geesh! What a colossal waste of time that was!
Got there (on time) ... went through all of the preliminaries (you know, all the standard rigmarole) ... and then, the guy decided to just plead "guilty" and be done. Why didn't he decided that the day before and save everyone the trouble? I think when coming face-to-face with "a jury of their peers" ... it suddenly becomes a little too real for some people to handle. I would imagine it's very intimidating.

And miss the funny bunny?! Not a chance! lol
Looks like no excuses were needed, but it really is a waste of everyone's time!

that WAS short sharp and shiney !! you do get a bit of money though, don't you ?
will you need to be ready for j/duty for the rest of the month ?
will you need to be ready for j/duty for the rest of the month ?
Roxy, the money they pay you for jury duty is maybe 5 or ten dollars a day; generally not even enough to pay for parking downtown.
Tater,
Wow... I've never seen one like that! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
It's kinda like when I called to say my Dad was
probably "unfit" for jury duty and she told me the "excuse"
wasn't acceptable... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Thus, the chat with her supervisor...
Dear God [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ! - Do you suppose Alzheimer's patients actually are
sitting on JURIES ?? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Rox,
Here, it (used to anyway) depend on whether it was a Justice Court
(local - usually traffic tickets and DUIs that went to a jury) or a
Superior Court "call"...
(It was about 100 years ago...) I was paid $12 a day for Justice Court
- (right "up the street") in downtown Scottsdale, plus they paid mileage
if you traveled further than 25 miles round trip (I didn't)
and the parking was free.
Superior Court was $18 per day, and our parking was validated, plus
they paid mileage for over 50 miles round-trip...
(I still didn't get mileage... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.])
What WAS cool was that I worked for Ma Bell and they're
VERY civic-minded, so they paid me also for the days I had jury duty
and didn't show up at work.
(A lot of employers deduct whatever the courts pay from your wages;
many don't pay you at all if you don't work...)
PLUS... if the "jury-duty" day didn't last until quiting time at Ma Bell,
I didn't have to go back to work. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

WELCOME, BUNNY!!
Yeah, that happens a lot... sit around ALL DAY...
because you've been assigned to a jury ...
and then they cut a deal.
"They" certainly do EVERYTHING possible to intimidate and get the
accused to plead. I resent the hell! out of that part.
