Ron once mentioned one called a flying saucer. He said they looked like flying saucers, but what was on the inside looked liked it came out of a dog can. lol
I have never seen them.
Has anyone else heard of flying saucers?

Do you have any other odd foods served at fairs or carnivals that you care to share?

I never heard of flying saucers at fairs, but it sounds a little like a Jamaican beef patty, which are actually quite tasty, except they aren't completely round, but semi-circular.

I'm not sure if it would be considered an "odd" food, but we have funnel cakes around here, which are basically fried batter, sprinkled with powdered sugar.

According to one website:

"Fried Dough: Popular at fairs in various forms and under various names: Elephant Ears (also Oliphaunt Ears), Flying Saucers, Doughboys. Usually made with a yeast dough that has been allowed to partially rise; frequently covered with powdered sugar."

Doesn't sound quite like Ron was talking about though.

I'm wondering if this is what Ron was talking about...

#97. Flying Saucer at Alberto's

Just like real flying saucers, it's origins are unknown, its
authenticity dubious. Every Alberto's, Alerto's and other Clone-ertos
has one. Most follow the formula: a crispy, fried flour tortilla formed
into a bowl, soupy refried beans at the bottom, stringy stewed beef on
top of that, and then a mess of other toppings which can include sauteed
onions and pepper, lettuce, and cheese.
Time is of the essence when you get one. The crispiness is as
fleeting as a real UFO sighting. Wait too long and its gone, usurped by
the wetness. Don't get me wrong, it's still good when it gets all
soggy like a limp noodle, but it's so much better when every forkful you
get has a little bit of crunch to go with the slop.

Something about the dish also lends itself to great past-midnight
eating. Maybe it's the warmth, maybe it's the messiness, or maybe it's
the fact that you can eat it in privacy, without the guilt or prying
eyes of witnesses.

Refried beans and stewed beef? Sounds like a good possibility!

I WANT ONE...! Sounds delicious!
It also sounds (kinda) like a Tostado with a LOT!
more "stuff" ! I love Mexican food!
About the only thing I can remember is -about 100 years ago -
(which is also about how long it's been since I've been to a fair)
They had fry-bread.
Everyone was raving! about it - I didn't try it then
(I don't usually eat much at a fair ) - I'm all about the RIDES!!
I kept hearing about it - for YEARS.
Turns out it's PJ's favorite! thing - so his Dad's GF makes it for him
a lot and it turns out... I think it's blah. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
