"To be, or not to be a good quote, that is the question..."
I would say a good quote is one that is memorable, accurate, truthful, and/or at least somewhat profound, or at least quite humorous. I think it may also have to do with the way (manner?) in which it was said. It could also have a factor of a bold prediction, or foreboding. Another thing I think that matters is if it is timeless.

President Eisenhower, upon leaving office, said "Beware the military-industrial complex." This is sort of profound, especially coming from somebody who was in the military for almost his entire career, and it is just as applicable today (maybe even more so) as it was when he said it.

"I have a dream..."  I don't think I need to even mention who said it. profound, truthful, memorable, and will ALWAYS be applicable, as long as there is prejudice and bigotry in this world.

"Do unto others..."  Nuff said, 2000 years later.

"We have nothing to fear, but fear itself."
May be just as true today; helped calm a nation edging on hysteria during the early stages of the Great Depression, and at least somewhat truthful, if not profound. He was talking about the mass hysteria which led to bank runs that ended up bankrupting a lot of banks, mainly because of a self-fulfilling prophecy, where the word spread like wildfire that a certain bank was going to run out of money, so that so many people literally ran to their bank to take their money out before the bank ran out of money, which in fact caused the banks to...run out of money. This was before the days of the FDIC, and in fact the very reason why it was established.

"Eat my shorts", a quote by a fictitious character, is not at all profound, but it is humorous, at least to some people. Although on second thought, that might be considered more of a catchphrase than a quote. Doh!

Tater makes some very good points. The best quotes (to me) are the ones that are short, to the point, and relate to everyday life in some profound way. I've always like this quote ... about quotes:

"I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.”
