Is it true that, in business, you have to lie a little sometimes?

Is it true that, in business, you have to lie a little sometimes?
My boss, the owner of a cab company, said that in our business, "You have to lie a little (to cusomers/potential customers) sometimes." I disagreed, and told her nobody can pay me enough to get me to lie. She said she'd have to remember that,
and it seems that she doesn't like me anymore, particularly since I said that.
While I'm not perfect, and I'm not saying I never lie, I don't feel like a company can/should expect a person to lie for them, just because they are paying you to work there. I'd like to think that I have a little more integrity than that, and I also feel that customers appreciate being told the truth, even if it's inconvenient. Nobody likes being lied to, especially if they are paying good money for a service. An example of this is when she told a new dispatcher that if you know it's going to be at least 45 minutes to an hour before we can pick them up, we should tell them it will be about 30 minutes. The owner is looking at it from a perspective of not losing business by telling them the truth, but I think in the long run, the customer would rather know if it's going to be a long wait, so they can plan accordingly, or explore another option, and they may be more likely to give us their business in the future, even if we don't get their business in the present.
Yesterday, she was talking about how some people lie about what time their train is arriving at a station when they call ahead of time for a ride. She said she hates being lied to.
I was very tempted to tell her that her customers don't like being lied to either...

Re: Is it true that, in business, you have to lie a little sometimes?
It seems that most people who offer jobs think that is a given and part of the job requirements. A friend worked as a telemarketer for a store here and was told to lie and do whatever it took to get the customer to get off the phone.
Most will do whatever it takes to keep a customer.

Yeah, I think you have a good point. And yet, companies don't like being lied to, but they don't think twice about lying to employees or their customers.
How about when you go to the doctor, have an appointment at 1:00 pm,they take you in & weigh you etc.,then say the Dr. will be with you in a minute, and you set & wait for an hour?
