Diners are nowhere near extinct around here; there are lots of them! In fact, New Jersey may be the diner capital of the world!

Diners are characterized by offering a wide range of foods, mostly American, a casual atmosphere, a counter, and late operating hours. "Classic American Diners" are often characterized by an exterior layer of glimmering stainless steel—a feature unique to diner architecture.

Most of the original type of diners are definitely a thing of the past and won't be found in many places. Tithe and I discussed this a while back and even searched for diners like the originals. They're not easily found and many modern diners just aren't the same.

Re: Crazy Fads
One aspect of most diners, at least typically here in the Northeast, is that while breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served, you can always get breakfast, any time of the day or night, and many of them are open 24 hours a day. Also typical is the counter with permanently fixed swivel chairs or stools bolted to the floor, and they also almost always have booths rather than tables and chairs.
The cuisine generally isn't very fancy; emphasis is usually more on large portions at reasonable prices.

How many diners are in your area Tater?
Here, I recently found a family restaurant named "Diner". lol It is so close to a diner with food at the prices you are talking about. It's the only place I have found that really comes close.

Re: Crazy Fads
There are lots of diners around here; which is not too surprising, considering many of them originated in this area. Not many of them still retain the original form of a silver exterior, or the old diner car style, but many of them here do replicate the original idea of a diner.

Lava lamps still seem to be a hit with many people. I put one in a rummage sale and three people were arguing over who should get it. lol
