Tomato puree or tomato sauce.. which do you prefer?

Can you state your reasons, please?

I prefer puree, since it is pure tomatoes, no salt or anything else added. Tomato sauce can have just about anything added to it, including sugar, high fructose corn syrup, salt, spices, MSG, etc. I need to watch my salt, and prefer to add the herbs and spices to my own taste.

what I got is :
I prefer(ed) Tomato sauce because I'm too lazy to
scraaaape! the puree out of the can and mix it forever.

Jaaj, are you thinking of paste? Puree isn't concentrated, it's about the same consistency as sauce, just without anything added.

Yes. It is "paste" is don't like.

An easy way to get the paste out of the can:

Remove top lid with can opener; turn can upside down and remove bottom lid, but leave in place. Hold can over pot, and push gently on lid. The entire contents plops right out!

I know what you mean about the thickness though; it can make it a little difficult to mix with other ingredients.

i use puree in cooking and sauce on stuff like pies,pasties ,sausage rolls ,bbq etc.
aussies are notorious for smothering their food in tomato sauce, including my kids, had to restrict to the above mentioned foods when they started putting it on roast beef, scrambled eggs ,curry !!!

i've always thought ketchup and tomato sauce are basically the same thing,is that so ?
tomato sauce basically is tomatos,sugar,vinegar a few spices and chemicals ,no chillies .is katsup distinctive in some way ?

I think someone - probably a manufacturer-
just decided to spell it the way it is most-commonly
pronounced. (?)
Catsup/ketchup has a LOT! more sugar, I think.
Otherwise, you're basically correct there too.

Roxy, I suspect that what you call tomato sauce, is what we call ketchup. What we call tomato sauce comes in a can, and while it can and often does have other ingredients besides tomatoes, it is still mostly tomatoes., and is used as a main ingredient in many Italian dishes, including spaghetti sauce.
Whereas ketchup or catsup has tomato paste, vinegar, sugar or corn syrup, salt, more salt, etc, etc, etc., and usually comes in a bottle (Often a plastic squeeze bottle nowadays), and is used primarily as a condiment on many foods, including (for some people) scrambled eggs, hamburgers, french fries or home fries, meat loaf, hot dogs....

The difference between ketchup and catsup? Depending on what country you're in and who you ask, it's either a trademark issue or one of certain ingredients or lack thereof, I believe.

I prefer Hunts for tomato sauce.
