Animals that live where you live
Now, for some stupid reason... I was under the mistaken impression I would be able to list all the animals in my state with little or no effort! lol
Well... I was wrong!
Here is where I'll start..
Do you have any state animals?
Wisconsin has two.
The Badger and White-tailed Deer:
Although badgers have been associated with our coat of arms, the state flag, the University of Wisconsin, the official seal and Cornish miners since the days of the Wisconsin Territory, it was four elementary school students from Jefferson County who discovered the animal had no official status in Wisconsin. You would think the badger was the only logical choice for state animal. Some northern legislators, however, wanted the white-tailed deer picked due to its strength, regal stature, and the economic value of deer hunting. In a compromise, the American badger (Taxidea taxus) was named the state animal and the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was named the state "wildlife animal" in 1957.

We don't have too many animals here. Of course everything was shipped in. We have a State fish, the Humuhumunukanukaapuaa. We have wild pig, wild goats, axis deer, and the mongoose.Horses and cattle and thats about it.

Re: Animals that live where you live
We have lots of small mammals and birds where I live. Philly is a big city, but we live on the edge of it, so it's closer to suburban here than downtown. There are squirrels, rabbits, possums, groundhogs, the occasional raccoon, and even skunks. There are few deer in the immediate area, but lots of them in the adjacent county, especially in or near the parks. Lots of birds too; robins, cardinals, blue jays, mourning doves, sparrows, crows and black birds are probably the most common.

Re: Animals that live where you live
Have you ever heard of a bird called a Franklin. He is like a pidgeon, walks more than he flies, and they are so noisy in the morning. I love song birds but this guy is noisy. If you hollar at them they shut up, but then start again, then they move on. He is a fat bird, I am sure they hunted him in the old days. Then we have these little green birds that come in the winter, I am terrible at bird names, we have the NENE way up at our volcano, 10,000ft. or below,we have cardinals, and a few others. I need to get a bird book. It's hard enough learning all the fish names as they are Hawaiian, so the birds come last, lol Our biggest varmit is the mongoose and he was brought here to keep the rat population down. The rats would come off the ships years ago, and started to be a problem, but no more.

I was wondering about the mongoose, because I didn't imagine them being native to Hawaii, but bringing them to the island to control the mice population, now that makes sense, as there probably weren't any natural predators for them, and mongoose do eat rodents. In fact, I believe that's about the only thing they do!

Correct. So much Tater came in on the ships they are always checking for invasive species because with this climate, everything can thrive. When we get Christmas trees , you would not believe what comes with them. Everything has to go through Ag first before being unloaded. They get snakes, ticks, rodents, etc. and we do not want any of thoe things here.

Re: Animals that live where you live
in the suburbs where i live, we have stumpy tail and blue tongue lizards, ghekos , and this time of year corellas, gahlas, rainow lorikeets, musk lorikeets.i avoid places where snakes are likely to be ,and we have plenty of red back spiders ,poisonous, but they like hiding in nooks and crannies and under out door furniture,so a little care is required when piking up things that havent been moved for some time [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: Animals that live where you live
I hate ticks, we had plenty in Ca. They would get on my dog and cat, then on us. I woke up one morning with one buried in my arm. They hurt plus that lymes disease they carry. We have all kinds of birds here, a lot of Egrets, ocean birds, high altitude birds such as the NENE, and they brought in the mongoose to keep the rat population down. We have axis deer, goats, mountain goats, and the usual dogs cats horses, cattle, and we have plenty of bugs, and lizards, the geko, chamellion, and one more type. We have black bees, honey bees, ants, fire ants, they are trying to get rid of, wasps, spiders, the worst being a cane spider, and my nightmare the worst bug of all ,the CENTIPEDE. They are very aggressive here and like to come inside on a rainy night. Their bite is mean. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

That would be interesting!
I think there are probably more unknown animals than most people think. I doubt we have seen all there really is.
