In June, two 34-year-old men in Horsham, Australia, underwent surgery as a result of a plan hatched during a drinking bout. They had both wondered if it hurt to get shot and thus obliged each other. [Daily Telegraph (London), 6-23-10]

Does it hurt to get shot with a wad of toilet paper?

Police: Man shot wife with toilet paper

REIDSVILLE, N.C., July 21 (UPI) -- Police in North Carolina said they arrested a man who allegedly loaded his gun with a wad of toilet paper and shot his wife in the back.

The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said Lonnie Irvin Pinnix, 38, loaded the pistol with toilet paper when his wife, Darlene Pinnix, 55, returned to their Reidsville home shortly after midnight Tuesday, WGHP-TV, High Point, N.C., reported Wednesday.

Investigators said the wife lay down on the bed and Lonnie Pinnix shot her in the back with the toilet paper ammunition when she refused his demands to get back up. Deputies said Darlene Pinnix was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for powder burns.

Lonnie Pinnix told deputies he shot his wife because she wouldn't leave, the report said. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and jailed in lieu of $1,000 bond.

Churchill's dentures fetch nearly $24,000

LONDON (Reuters) – A partial set of British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill's gold-mounted dentures has fetched 15,200 pounds ($23,770) at auction, over three times the estimate.

The false teeth, specially designed to disguise Churchill's lisp, were sold by the son of the technician who was commissioned to make them.

They had been expected to make a maximum of 5,000 pounds at Thursday's sale by Keys auctioneer.

"The atmosphere was electric," said a Keys' spokesman.

The buyer, a collector of Churchill memorabilia from Gloucestershire, also owns the microphone with which Churchill announced the end of the war in Europe in 1945.

Ohio Red Cross giving away new car, or Amish buggy

CLEVELAND – To spur blood donations, an Ohio Red Cross chapter is offering people who give a pint of blood the chance to win a car or a horse-drawn buggy.

Spokeswoman Christy Chapman in Cleveland says the Red Cross didn't want to leave its many Amish donors out of the giveaway. The organization's Northern Ohio blood services region includes three counties with one of the nation's largest Amish populations.

The Red Cross regional operation has a board member who is Amish and who is arranging to have a buggy custom made for the contest, which wraps up Sept. 6.

Blood donors who prefer a more modern mode of transportation can win a 2010 Nissan Versa.

2 women charged in kindergarten graduation brawl

VICTORVILLE, Calif. – Two women have been charged with misdemeanors for a fight that led to a brawl during a Southern California kindergarten graduation ceremony.

San Bernardino County investigators say the women were arguing and it got physical in a field near the June ceremony at Puesta del Sol Elementary in Victorville.

Several men got involved and the incident turned into a brawl, forcing school officials to place the school on lockdown until deputies sorted things out. No one was hurt.

Court records show misdemeanor charges have been filed against 31-year-old Queiona Burt and 29-year-old Marina Ruth Vargas.

Prosecutors say they face up to six months in jail if convicted for interference with peaceful conduct at a school and 90 days in jail for unlawful acts committed on school grounds.

Police: Fake ad sends scavengers to woman's home

Fri Aug 6, 12:45 pm ET

CHICAGO – A Chicago man is accused of taking family bickering too far by allegedly posting a fake Craigslist ad that said his sister was giving away all her belongings.

Police say the ad triggered a rush of bargain hunters to the Joliet, Ill., home of Paul Grachan's sister, and that she received phone calls from people asking about her things.

A Will County judge last week issued a $3,000 warrant against Grachan on charges of misdemeanor disorderly conduct. The ad was posted last August.

The 37-year-old Grachan says he had nothing to do with the ad. He says he has had a feud with his sister and that the two haven't spoken in about a year.

Newspaper: NZ gambler trumped by own casino ban

Thu Aug 5, 6:58 pm ET

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A man who won 60,000 New Zealand dollars ($44,000) playing poker at an Auckland casino was refused the jackpot because he had banned himself from the premises for gambling too much, a newspaper reported on Friday.

Sothea Sinn, 28, won the prize playing Caribbean stud poker at Auckland's Skycity Casino on Wednesday but casino staff refused to pay, saying he was banned at his own request,The Dominion-Post newspaper reported.

"I was absolutely gutted," Sinn told the newspaper.

Sinn said that in 2004 he demanded the casino ban him and his girlfriend because he was gambling too much. He said he thought the ban had expired, but casino staff said he had agreed to undergo counseling before readmission and had not done so.

Sinn said he would take his case to New Zealand gambling authorities.

Two-year-old Ardi Rizal of Banyuasin, Indonesia, has developed a two-pack-a-day cigarette habit, according to several news organizations that splashed his story around the world in May, with video of Ardi casually puffing away as he frolics on his tricycle. Said Ardi's mother, "If he doesn't get cigarettes, he gets angry and screams and batters his head against the wall." Ardi's father, noting the kid's pudginess, seems not to sense the problem: "He looks pretty healthy to me." An additional concern is financial: Ardi will smoke only one particular premium brand, at a cost of the equivalent of about $5.50 a day. [New York Daily News, 5-26-10, Daily Mail (London), 5-27-10]

Oregon girl not bitter after lemonade stir

Sat Aug 7, 2:27 am ET

PORTLAND, Ore. – After a county inspector squeezed out a kid's lemonade business, so many Oregonians puckered up in disgust that the county chairman had to pour on a little sugar.

The apology sweetened up some sour feelings and made 7-year-old Julie Murphy eligible to resume selling her Kool-Aid and water concoction for 50 cents a cup.

Last week at a local arts fair, Julie and her mother were surprised when a county inspector asked to see their restaurant license.

They didn't have one. The inspector told them they would face a fine of up to $500 if they didn't stop selling lemonade.

Other vendors urged Julie and her mother not to leave. A second inspector arrived and the two inspectors were surrounded by a crowd of vendors supporting Julie and her mother.

Ultimately, Julie and her mother packed up the stand, and as Julie left the fair she was crying.

But Julie has prevailed.

Jeff Cogen, chairman of Multnomah County, says the health inspectors were "just following the rule book" but they should have given the girl and her mom a break. On Thursday, he talked with Julie's mom to apologize.

"A lemonade stand is a classic, iconic American kid thing to do," Cogen told The Oregonian. "I don't want to be in the business of shutting that down."

And how does Julie feel about this?

Her mother, Maria Fife, said she and her daughter appreciates the apology.

But the sweet and sour tale of lemonade stands at the Portland art fair might not yet be over.

According to the Oregonian, one vendor at the local arts fair is planning a "lemonade revolt" the next time the fair is held — later this month.

Cogen says he doesn't know what he'll do if a bunch of fair vendors try selling lemonade without a license.

As it turns out, lemons may present county officials with something of a pickle.

Cat turns on vacuum, causes emergency alert

Tue Aug 10, 3:21 pm ET

BERLIN – A cat home alone in Germany apparently turned on the vacuum cleaner, frightened itself half to death and wound up being attended to by emergency services. Police in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth said a neighbor heard the cat's cries — not to mention a vacuum left running for hours — and feared there'd been a terrible accident.

The fire service sped to the scene Monday evening, but found only the cat and the machine.

A police statement Tuesday said the emergency call wasn't entirely in vain, though, because "at least the cat could be calmed down."

4 sisters have 4 babies in 4 days

CHICAGO – Four sisters from one family have each given birth within four days. That's four sisters, four babies, four days. The same obstetrician delivered the babies of three of the sisters — 27-year-old Lilian Sepulveda, 29-year-old Saby Pazos and 24-year-old Leslie Pazos — in the same suburban Chicago hospital on Friday and Saturday.

A fourth sister, Heidi Lopez, gave birth on Monday in California.

Family members said the women didn't plan the timing. Obstetrician Dr. Jean Alexandre, who delivered the three babies in suburban Chicago, calls the births "very unusual but wonderful at the same time."

Dog chows down on SC man's school board petition

Sat Aug 14, 9:24 am ET

BEAUFORT, S.C. – The dog really did eat the homework, or, in this case, the petition a South Carolina man was going to file to run for school board. The Beaufort Gazette reported Friday that Terry Thomas of Ladys Island had a petition with almost 200 signatures when he went out to check the mail. But when he returned from the mail box, Spencer, his 8-month-old Labrador and bull mastiff mix, had chewed up the petition.

Now Thomas won't be able to run for in November for a spot on the Beaufort County School Board. The retiree is a substitute teacher and an assistant football coach at Beaufort High.

But he said when students use the old "the dog ate my homework" excuse in class, he just might believe them.

Power cutoff leaves salon customer bald on top

Sat Aug 14, 9:16 am ET

BRUCE, Miss. – A beauty salon owner in in north Mississippi blamed an unexpected power cutoff for a customer's partial baldness. Tessa Mingo, owner of People's Choice Hair Salon in Bruce, told WTVA television that she paid her electric bill July 19. But when a customer came in recently to get her hair colored, the electricity shut down.

Mingo said there was no way to wash the chemicals off the woman's hair because the salon's electric water heater wasn't working. The customer was left mostly bald on the top half of her head.

Mingo said she believes the power company mistakenly credited her home account rather than her business account.

A Pontotoc Electric Power Association manager told WTVA he can't publicly discuss a customer's bills.

Personal note: I don't quite get this one; she couldn't use cold water to rinse her hair? It might have been a little uncomfortable, but still better that being bald?

More than 10,000 Chinese set human domino record

Fri Aug 13, 8:58 am ET

BEIJING – More than 10,000 people in northern China have set a world record for the longest chain of human dominoes.

Arranged in lines, they slowly collapsed backward onto each other in sequence from a sitting position like a line of toppling dominoes.

The 10,267 people who took part wore color-coordinated clothes that spelled out in English and Chinese the name of the city of Ordos in Inner Mongolia where the record attempt was made Thursday.

The monitor the Guinness World Records, Wu Xiaohong, declared the new record.

It beat the record set a decade ago in Singapore by more than 1,000 people.

Scot Davis, 52, was charged with robbing the All in the Family bar in Des Moines, Iowa, in March. Davis, a contractor who is friends with bartender Gladys York, had spent the evening at the bar passing out business cards before leaving. Said York, when Davis re-appeared carrying a .22-caliber rifle and demanding money, "Scot, What the (expletive)?" Robber nabbed after mocking police in email

BERLIN (Reuters) – A German bank robber led his pursuers straight to him after taunting police in an email over their efforts to catch him. Authorities in the southern city of Wuerzburg said on Wednesday the 19-year-old sent emails to police and two newspapers to point out factual errors in the report of his bank raid in the town of Roettingen a week ago.

According to daily Bild, he mocked the police for getting his age, height and accent wrong then pointed out he escaped in a car, not on foot.

"His game of cat and mouse went all wrong," a Wuerzburg police spokesman said.

Police traced his email and arrested him in a gambling hall in Hamburg just a few hours later.

"He was completely shocked," the spokesman said.

Police call 'Ma' on dropped cell phone, ID suspect

Wed Aug 18, 9:10 pm ET

ATHENS, Ga. – Thanks a lot, Mom. Police seeking a man accused of breaking into an elementary school said they identified the suspect by calling "Ma" from the contact list of a cell phone he dropped as he fled.

A police report said officers responding to an alarm at an elementary school in Athens in northeast Georgia arrived in time Monday to see a man running through the cafeteria and out the back door.

Police failed to catch the man, but say he dropped his cell phone as he ran.

According to the report, officers picked up the phone, searched the contact list and called a number marked "Ma." They say a woman who answered gave them her son's name.

The suspect wasn't immediately identified.

Man nabbed with fake $1 million bills in Abu Dhabi

Sun Aug 29, 8:20 am ET

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Can you break a $1 million?

Not a chance. But the story is rich in audacity.

A man from the Ivory Coast is in police custody in Abu Dhabi after allegedly persuading a woman to try to exchange two phony $1 million bills at the UAE's Central Bank.

Police say the suspect promised the woman a 30 percent cut after the bills were traded — presumably for U.S. bills or UAE dirham. The suspect was identified in press reports Sunday only by the initials A.B.

The phony notes feature the $1 portrait of George Washington and are mostly black and white on the front.

The National newspaper quotes Col. Rashid Mohammed Bursheed, the head of the organized crime unit, as saying the suspect claims he thought the bills were real.

In September, the Romanian Senate rejected a proposal by two legislators to regulate, and tax, fortune-tellers and "witches," even though the government is otherwise desperately seeking new sources of revenue. A prominent witch had complained about potential record-keeping burdens on the "profession," but one of the bill's sponsors told the Associated Press he thinks opposition came from lawmakers who were frightened of having spells and curses placed on them.
