Do you suppose sour milk could be milk that is going bad? Seems to me there are different answers for this, but wonder if sour milk was originally milk that was going bad.

I think I saw something about this back when I was trying to verify what sweet milk meant. I don't remember for sure, but I think it's either buttermilk or something similar.

Sour Milk in Recipes

"In recipes, soured milk created by the addition of an acid or by bacterial fermentation can often be used interchangeably. For example, 1 cup of cultured buttermilk, a soured milk produced by bacterial fermentation, can be replaced by 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar plus enough milk to make 1 cup. The chemically soured milk can be used after standing for 5 minutes."

Huh. So what you're saying is - I'm wrong
in supposing someone tried to salvage "turned" milk, I guess ? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Is "sour milk" sold in the dairy case?
I can not remember ever needing to know this.

Ja'aj... what Tater is telling us is how they make soured milk now, but that doesn't mean people always did that.
What I'm thinking is "way back when" some people might have said "hell, I'm not wasting that milk!" lol Seriously, I think that might be true.
