I don't know... that's why the question is here. I am not much of a movie buff and wanted input! lol

Well, lets see, there was Mad Max, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome; they were based in Australia, or at least filmed there, I think...

Mad max... boring.. but it was filmed here. Not that far away really.. approx an hour and a half from here.
Now.. a really good Aussie film and filmed in the outback that shows what the top end of Australia is really like. Hot.. arid and desolate for the most part.. unlike down here at the bottom of Australia. The film is called.. "Red Dog". You will laugh and cry and everything in between.

there are Australian movies ,and there are Australian movies .
Delightful as it is,I do not class 'Red dog' as an Australian movie,it's a movie made in Australia for an oversees market,to me it looked more like an American movie ,that's not a necessarily bad thing ,so it's an imitation Australian movie .
'Babe' the piglet who wanted to be a sheep dog,gorgeous movie ,most enjoyable ,ditto.
real Australian movies, Cossie,The Boys,tv series Sea Change ,The cars that ate Paris,Priscilla queen of the Desert,Muriels wedding,any thing with Toni Collete before Hollywood,anything with Noel Taylor, the best Aussie movies are not widely known,Mad Max is the exception.
Nicole Kidman and Olivia Newton John imho are celebrities,not serious actors,so ,Tater, they don't count .Most of our tv series are pretty well Aussie,and not a kangaroo in sight !

The Castle was a classic Aussie movie with classic lines that people still use... ha ha ha.. "Tell him he's dreamin" "That's goin straight to the pool room" lol.. and of course... "Deidre Chambers... fancy meeting you here".
I am not a big movie buff, but i loved Red Dog.

Tater ,found the trailer for Walk about ,I did see it years ago, remembered some bits of it, will try to get it now.

The trailer for Australian director Warwick Thornton's debut feature film, 'Samson & Delilah'

this is an excellent movie, what makes it so good is the writer and director is aboriginal,and shows it as it is, more or less.

I saw it a year or two ago on cable TV. I thought it was quite interesting, and the scenery was better than I expected, considering it took place almost entirely in the Outback.

Edit: Whoops, I was talking about Walkabout; I didn't realize you had posted about another movie while I was busy typing...

I watched the trailer and it's interesting. May have to see about the movie itself.

Storm Boy is a really good Aussie movie.
