R U 4 dis kind of typing?

Internet seems to be invaded with all kinds of short cuts for words and a lack of real words....
da is supposed to mean the....
dis is dat... I mean, this is that...
R U is really "are you"...

What do you think when you see all those variations of the spellings and words?

When I see that kind of typing, I tend to assume they are typing on a cell phone, which can b a rl pain n da but.

cell phone or not... aren't people allowed to correct and use the correct spelling?
It bothers me... just makes me think people are becoming dumbed down... if that makes any sense.

I think part of it is for parents to insist on things done right. I don't allow text talk or typing here.

So Tater, has dumbing down always been a part of life in one way or another?

The problem I have is that these abbreviations can have so many different meanings, not all of which are polite. I have to check on Urban Dictionary and then try to figure out just how rude the sender is being.

Most times, I know what is meant...it's just hard to read!

Like I said, I could, but I would not want to! Contractions are our friends!

There is a road where I used to live in the 'burbs that went from Newportville to Fallsington, so of course it was originally called Newportville-Fallsington Road. Can you blame the sign-makers for eventually shortening it to New Falls Road?

Giving a road a new name, to me, isn't the same as sounding like you can't speak correctly or type correctly... using "da" makes me think a person just isn't mentally grasping the word!

I agree about mangling the English language, but I do understand the concept of shortcuts on text messages, when you are using a phone that doesn't have a keyboard. B instead of be, or U for you is just a lot quicker than trying to type complete words when for each letter, you have to choose between 3 or 4 letters. And even if you have a complete keyboard, the tiny size of that keyboard makes it virtually impossible to type very quickly with one or two fingers at a time.

But dis instead of this? You're only saving one letter, and I agree, it does make you sound kinda dumb.

Oh, I almost forgot another reason for this phenomenon: Twitter, with its 140 character limit. I never understood why they felt the need to limit it that severely in the first place. How meaningful can a message that short possibly be, if it's relating to a serious subject?

The shortcuts and such... too often they become the normal. Sometimes, I need to remind others that we aren't computers or stupid phones...yes, stupid phones (not smart at all)... and we don't speak like that.
I've seen homework with text typing and the teacher never corrected it or saw it as a problem.

Twitter... I think because it's supposed to be short and simple..to the point and many postings... not just one long one. Maybe to tell everyone what you had for breakfast or all your business in short increments. lol

I met a couple of people on those sites, as well as on Yahoo Answers, that I'm still in contact with.
So yes, some good things come from sites like them, even if Yahoo always claimed that Answers was NOT a social site. Wink

Lorry, I haven't been on there for a while, as most of my contacts have not been active either, but one of my first contacts was Breezey. So chances are that none of us would be here if not for answers, and if not for Breezey starting this site, for that matter.

Most internet people seem to move on or get lost.
Very few really stick around or keep in touch... although there are some who go the extra mile. smile2

Not really. I only remember Ron and Ja'aj being really upset with Yahoo... and I thought I could make something to keep us all connected if we lost accounts on Yahoo... and we could have fun without worry of violations and such.
