Re: Questions Only
I have seen Koalas in the bush. There are so many down the Otways that they are culling them because there is just not enough food and they are not in their usual habitat any more and are coming closer to the towns and causing accidents when touro's (tourists) stop on the side of what are very narrow sections of the road, just to see the koalas.
The question is more.. Will the tourists be happy when all the koalas have been eradicated because of them all pulling over and causing bedlam on the roads?

Re: Questions Only
Sounds like a similar situation to key deer in the Florida Keys; have you ever heard of key deer?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
They are basically miniature deer - full grown males are only about 30 inches (about 3/4 of a meter) tall. There are only about 700 left, and 30 to 40 get killed every year by cars. The problem is, they are so used to people in cars stopping to feed them that they will not hesitate to walk right up to cars looking for food. Of course, they often get hit by cars because of this learned behavior.

Re: Questions Only
Are we not the main problem where this is concerned? Making wild animals tame and then placing them in danger?
I have not heard of key deer, but the people down the road from us farm just your ordinary deer. They are not that common around these parts... The wild ones out bush, people hunt.

Those in the picture are NOT average size - Would you believe they normally grow to about a foot to maybe 16 inches in diameter?

It sure is... the flesh is your normal orange'e colour.. but the skin is a definite shade of bluey grey. It's great for making pumpkin soup. Do you have Jap or Kent pumpkin over there?

Re: Questions Only
Do you know how hard it is to answer your questions with another question? lol
Kent is quite a small pumpkin with a dark green skin with white freckles on it, but very sweet and then there is butternut which is wonderful to roast. Roasting really brings out it's flavour.

Acorn squash is shaped like an acorn, but bigger than an acorn, about the size of a large apple, and they are very good roasted. Do you like roasted pumpkin seeds?

Re: Questions Only
It sounds like you are describing what we call Golden Nugget pumpkins. They are about the size of a fist clenched. We use them to roast and well as people dry them as ornaments.
Do I LOVE roasted pumpkin nuts?
Yes and have them as a snack and use them in baking

This is an acorn squash:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
While it is hard to tell from the photo, it is generally green on the outside.
Why do we seem to call the same thing by different names so often, even when we use the same language?

That acorn pumpkin is different to our Golden nugget pumpkins. I can't seem to put pics up, so google them to see the difference. I can see why it is called an acorn pumpkin. It's cute.

It's not called an acorn pumpkin, it's called acorn squash. My point was that Aussies seem to call everything in that family pumpkins, whether they are tiny or huge, while we call them pumpkins if they are large, but squash or gourds if they are smaller.
Do you have summer squash, or zucchini squash?
Summer squash:

Zucchini:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Both are about the size of a cucumber; young ones can be a few inches long and barely an inch thick, while mature specimens, especially zucchini, can be well over a foot long and several inches thick. They are definitely a lot more tender and tastier while they are young.

Funny the differences... lol.. We do have summer squash as you call it.. but we just call over sized zucchini .. just "squash" regardless of it's colour. We do call a pumpkin a pumpkin regardless of their size.

I shred squash and have it in my lettuce salad.. along with tomatoes, carrots, onions... sometimes cheese...
Sometimes, I shred squash and saute it with oil and onions and then add cream and cheese and make stuffed tomatoes.
I didn't have even one pumpkin here.
