Re: Questions Only
Yes it is. We have them in Ca. There is red gum and blue gum I do believe? I think they all came from Australlia because they are a very fast grower. The trees are tall and straight, but can be hard to split into firewood oif they are growing alone and not in a group because the wind will twist them. It's also very heavy wood when green. It's dense and burns very hot but faster than oak. We even have them here as one day doing landscape work way down on the bottom of this property these trees must have been 4 to 6 ftor more around nd easily 100ft. tall. Man they were awesome. I woner how long they have been there?

Re: Questions Only
Are they a forest fire hazard there like they are in California, Ron?

Re: Questions Only
Fortunately not as most of them are gone. They do grow in the higher elevations but not big groves. What I have seen in upcountry was a preserve with rows of pine trees they have been experimenting on. Down here, sea level, the trees were all cleared for the almighty pineapple and sugar cane. Tater you just would not believe how easy things grow here and the wind, or birds will carry a seed, and wow, how did that tree get there. What is a fire hazard now is the vacant cane fields that are full of brush but they are developing that into coffee. Fires are scary around here because of our trade winds.

Re: Questions Only
Oh, I'd believe it, as that's how it was in Florida. But doesn't coffee require higher elevations?

Re: Questions Only
Nope they are pretty close to sea level but elevation wise 500ft. or more but away from the ocean front. They grow up on the hills here but not way up.

Re: Questions Only
That's odd, I always heard coffee doesn't do well unless it's in higher elevations, like at least 1500 or 2000 feet. I'm not sure why. Maybe you get enough of a breeze so it's not too hot?

Re: Questions Only
Our trades come out of the east, that is our natural air conditioner, so it is weird but they grow great here. We are probably 500ft. up from sea level and right next to us they are growing coffee. In fact they are selling these million dollar estates on 5 acres, in the coffee farm next to us.

Re: Questions Only
Well 500 feet might be enough. I just know they need a tropical climate, but don't do well at sea level.

Re: Questions Only
Ccorrect, they need to be away from the salt air. Only certain plants can grow along the ocean, and you're right, coffee is not one of them. They like the hot but higher elevations. I am just guessing at 500 ft. but I will find out exactly how high they must be away from the ocean. This new farm is called the Kaanapali coffee farm.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Tater, check this out and you will see they are not that far from the ocean.

Re: Questions Only
Well, being elevated isn't just about being away from the ocean. I'm sure they don't lake the salt, most plants don't, but even in landlocked places like Columbia, they like to be in higher elevations. Not too high either, I believe the ideal elevation is something like 2000 feet? Are we forgetting this is the questions only thread? LOL!
