Same as when people say "See you next year!" on New Years Eve. Or like the local CVS pharmacy that has a flier announcing "The Biggest Sale of the Year", which started...yesterday, 1/1/2012.

I don't know. It's the first thing you say. Also, when anyone falls or has an accident of any kind, they ask, 'are you OK?'

Yup. I've discouraged a lot of people who mean
"Hi!" from using, "How are you?"
I buttonhole them and tell them.
