Are all "calico" cats females? :: Comments
Wiki and Tater are right. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
In all the Calico cats I've known (and I know BUNCHES! of cats!)
I have only known of one person who said they had a
male Calico - ( I don't think so...) but I never met that cat
personally to check. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Also - Some people who think a cat is a Calico are confusing
them with Tortoiseshells.

I heard this.. that calico cats are all females.. for the first time, when we brought our kittens home. We did some checking and found....
"Calico cats, with their orange, black and white [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], are almost always female. So are black and orange tortoiseshells."
Here's the link for the why's of it all. I found it interesting!

Well! THAT ain't gonna happen! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I'm not! registering! to read an article. Waaa!
I'm going on the same theory that I've gone with for years!
That it's (more or less) the same reason Jennies are always female.
I didn't realize that the same "amost always" rule applied to
Tortiseshells. Cool!
Humph!

Genetics of calico cats
Calico cats are almost always female because the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]determines the color of the cat and a female cat has two X chromosomes.A common male cat has one X and one Y chromosome. Since the Ychromosome does not have any color genes, there is no chance he couldhave both orange and non-orange together. One main exception to this isthe chromosomally abnormal XXY male which can be tortoiseshell orcalico, but this is very rare. Most male calico or tortoiseshell catsare sterile due to the abnormality of carrying two X chromosomes."In the case of a calico cat, the feline’s parents passed on different versions of X chromosomes genes related to coat color."[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The color of calico or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]is determined by the X chromosome(s). Tortoiseshell and calico cats arealmost always female because of X chromosome inactivation.[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.][You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Oh c'mon!
There is no way I know something you don't know, tater. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
However...
A jenny is the offspring of a Mule and a donkey. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
They are unfailingly sterile.
(Also I think Ligers may be sterile too. ? )
It's the double chromosome thingy. (I think) Similar breeding to similar ?
Bree,
Yeah! Now that you mention it - WHY didn't my pop-up blocker work?
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] It didn't even occur to me that was what it was - I so! hate! those things.

Well now I'm even more confused, because I know that mules are the offspring of a horse and a donkey, and I thought THEY were sterile.

It's not the same as advertisements pop ups. It's made for that site, by the person running it. I can do that here, too. Just don't think many would appreciate it. lol

A jenny is a female mule. A mule IS the product!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]of a horse and a donkey... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ...
and I am going to go take a NAP. I am getting a headache

According to wikipedia, a jenny is a female donkey, and sometimes a female mule is called a jenny as well. And I also learned something else; a donkey is also known as an ass (which I knew), but while the females are called a jenny, a male ass is called a jack. Hence the term jackass. So all jackasses are male! But I bet you girls already knew that...

THAT is hilarious!!! lmao!!! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Please take note that the reverse does not necessarily apply. Not all males are jackasses.
Very good point Tater!Tater Salad wrote:Please take note that the reverse does not necessarily apply. Not all males are jackasses.
Don't know very much about calico cats ...
but ... I suspect that here on Yafooey ...
there are some Cheshire Kitties ...
