Re: Why does my pound cake weigh ten ounces?
I think it's called pound cake because that's how much weight you gain when you eat it.

"Pound cakes were originally called pound cakes because
their recipes called for a pound of lard, a pound of sugar, etc. "

Re: Why does my pound cake weigh ten ounces?
A pound of lard and sugar... seems a little excessive! lol But...probably sounds worse than it really is. I guess I'm just use to cups for measurement. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Why does my pound cake weigh ten ounces?
Ja'aj is correct; my mom used to say the same thing, a pound of this, a pound of that...
Actually, for a full size cake, it's about right, if you think about it, since two cups of flour or sugar would be roughly equivalent to a pound, and if you consider that a pound of butter has four sticks, each of which is half a cup, so a pound of butter is exactly 2 cups.

Yeah, it does sound like a lot, especially if you consider that a pound of butter has 3200 calories!

Hmmm.. I had already planned on turkey and ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, peas and carrots, stuffing, pumpkin pies, cheesecake, jello with fruit and coolwhip, rolls, cranberry sauce.... not sure, but that might be it. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
