Ja'aj is correct; my mom used to say the same thing, a pound of this, a pound of that...
Actually, for a full size cake, it's about right, if you think about it, since two cups of flour or sugar would be roughly equivalent to a pound, and if you consider that a pound of butter has four sticks, each of which is half a cup, so a pound of butter is exactly 2 cups.
