Since it's a law to wear safety belts in vehicles..
Why aren't buses and a few other public transport businesses included in the seat belt law? Why aren't school buses equipped with safety belts? What about city buses?
I don't see why you wouldn't want to make sure 20 plus people in one vehicle are not safe and secure. Even airplanes have seat belts.

I always wondered about school buses myself. Good question!

I have heard some "excuses" for reasons, but none of them really seemed plausible to me.

hate to cynical, but would it be the cost?Breezey wrote:I have heard some "excuses" for reasons, but none of them really seemed plausible to me.

If it is the cost, it's because they allow specific companies to rob them blind for things.
If cost doesn't matter for individuals, it surely shouldn't matter for the lives of many. As we are always told, safety should come first.... buckle up... it's the law.

I truly believe school children should be wearing seat belts.
I also believe what's good for some is good for all... why pick and choose who should obey a law supposedly made for safety of people?

Re: Since it's a law to wear safety belts in vehicles..
all buses should provide seat belts, ESPECIALLY school buses .the bus i was on had a little sign stating that it was compulsory to wear seat belts where they are provided, so i take it not all buses have them.

Re: Since it's a law to wear safety belts in vehicles..
Preschool buses have them, but many regular school buses do not. City buses for public transportation don't have seat belts. Why would a few lives in a car be worth safety belts, but not a vehicle with a lot more lives at stake? The excuses given for not having seat belts in public vehicles doesn't make a case with me.

Re: Since it's a law to wear safety belts in vehicles..
Like Tater, I've wondered why school busses
don't have seatbelts for a very long time.
This is my conclusion:
Since the presence of seatbelts in cars has been a
federal law for YEARS...
and recently it has become a nationwide ticketable law
that they be worn by EVERYONE in the vehicle...
(and no way! do I buy that it is for any reason other than economics)
i.e.; uninsured persons ending up in hospitals are apparently a HUGE
drain on the government finances- I can only assume that the reason
that small children - attending PUBLIC schools - aren't worthy of
protection is BECAUSE...
public transportation is REQUIRED to be insured.
Ergo:
if someone is injured on one of the PUBLIC CONVEYANCES-
the owners -(schools, rapid transit, etc.)
will bear the brunt of the cost.
