Did you ever see Santa?

I can remember sneaking out into our lounge room with 5 of my sisters to see if we could catch a glimpse of Santa, in the very wee hours of Christmas eve.. when we heard Mum coming down the passage. The others quickly ran for our bedroom. At the time we, all 7 of us girls, slept in bunk beds that Dad had made for us, in the one room. I was the scapegoat who never made it out of the room before Mum grabbed me and smacked me for being out of bed.. I told her that the others were too, but when she went into our room, they all pretended to be asleep... till she noticed that 3 of them were in the wrong beds and 2 were hiding under the blankets in one bed... The next Christmas, we had moved house and the kids next door had a cubby house. I saw Santa going into that cubby house with a large red sack. I told the others to come and have a look but they thought I was just trying to get them into trouble for the previous year of me being the only one who got a smack. I really did see him.... or should I say the next door neighbours Dad dressed up as Santa.. lol.

What's a cubby house?

I never saw Santa dressed as Santa going about his business; just "Santas" dressed the part and asking what we want for Christmas, etc.

We did of course hear our parents downstairs, but I don't remember ever being daring enough to sneak a peek. I am pretty sure that as long as I can remember, we always had suspicions about the truth.

I remember a time when my brother was being a bit..snotty...saying things he really shouldn't have.. when a black mitt came around the door and hit him in the face. lol I seriously never found out who that might have been... where that mitt came from was our back porch...

And for a more real santa... Walmart once got lucky with one who had a cancellation...this guy is amazing! The real deal! Long white beard and hair, glasses and an actual reindeer to pet! I will always remember (as an adult)...that being the one santa I would always see as the realest. And his voice and eyes..they were kind, to match that whole santa thing.

Tater... a cubby house is a play house for kids in their backyards. What do you call them? Do kids there have them?
How did you find out about Santa???

I found out by being outside Mum and Dad's bedroom hiding up in the big old Jacaranda tree, pretending I was in fairyland, amongst all the purple flowers, when I heard the sound of music coming from their room. When Mum had left, I sneaked into the house and into their room. There was a chair in the corner, so I climbed up to look in the cupboard and saw a music box. I didn't touch it and quickly got down from the chair and left their room in case I got caught.. I knew I would be in huge trouble if I was seen. On Christmas morning, my sister got that very music box.. I had no idea before that.

According to my sister, most times, there wasn't much hope of that.. times were really hard and child support wasn't enforced like it usually is now.
