Re: Have you heard of net neutrality?
What is Net Neutrality?
Net Neutrality is the Internet’s guiding principle: It preserves our right to communicate freely online. This is the definition of an open Internet.Net Neutrality means an Internet that enables and protects free speech. It means that Internet service providers should provide us with open networks — and should not block or discriminate against any applications or content that ride over those networks. Just as your phone company shouldn't decide who you can call and what you say on that call, your ISP shouldn't be concerned with the content you view or post online.
Without Net Neutrality, cable and phone companies could carve the Internet into fast and slow lanes. An ISP could slow down its competitors' content or block political opinions it disagreed with. ISPs could charge extra fees to the few content companies that could afford to pay for preferential treatment — relegating everyone else to a slower tier of service. This would destroy the open Internet.

Re: Have you heard of net neutrality?
That's a pretty good summary of the situation, Breezey. Lorry, you probably haven't heard of it because it applies only to the US, at least for now.
Imagine if a huge conglomerate (such as Comcast) owned or controlled the majority of the cable and internet providers, and the same company owned one of the 3 major broadcast networks in a given country, as well as myriad cable networks, and it's own premium movie channel. Now imagine if this same company demanded that it's competitors (such as Netflix) pay a huge premium for the "privilege" of not having their internet movie service slowed down to such an extant as to render its service practically unusable.
Now stop imagining, because this is what Comcast actually tried to do. Comcast's argument was that websites such as Netflix used more bandwidth, so they should pay more than the average website. But in reality, Netflix wasn't slowing down the internet, Comcast was slowing down Netflix, and other high volume websites; basically trying to extort a higher price. Internet users responded by the millions, telling the FCC (the US Federal Communications Commission) that they felt this was highly unfair.

Re: Have you heard of net neutrality?
Columnist Ed Feulner: "Ready to pay more for Internet access? Me neither. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what we can expect under the 'net neutrality' rules being pushed by President Obama. 'Net neutrality' may sound harmless, but there would be nothing neutral about this change. ... In short, [broadband providers] can offer -- and charge -- what they want. That’s good for consumers, because it means that in order to compete, they’re always trying to win and keep customers by offering better, faster service at lower rates. ... [N]et neutrality would mean more than a rate hike (which will naturally hit lower-income Americans the hardest). Coming under the FCC’s regulatory thumb would harm innovation and make broadband companies wary of investing in new ways to provide better, faster and cheaper service. ... So let’s see: We’d pay more -- for less. Sounds like a government plan, all right. Here’s a better idea: Leave 'net neutrality' junked on the shoulder of the information superhighway instead."

Re: Have you heard of net neutrality?
Okay, now we're getting somewhere. This is not the first time I have heard or seen Obama's name in connection with net neutrality.
Going to do some more research on this...
Nice to see you, Jack.

Re: Have you heard of net neutrality?
The only people who are against net neutrality are the cable companies and there lobbyists.
