AH... !
( [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.])
Well, gee... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ... "living on my own" means just what most people
(people without children ! - who've recently reached their majority)
think ! it means - ie; 'I live without my parent(s), grandparent(s)
or benefit (drawback?) of the presence of any supervising adult
(harshing my mellow.) [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I am responsible for : my place of residence - ie; the rent; the food,
the furnishings, (incuding ! towels and sheets!) cleaning prducts, etc. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
AND... I come and go as I please ! without parental hindrance *er* guidance.'
HOWEVER... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
What "living on your own" means to a recently (semi)-emancipated
offspring of yours is [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] :
MOM frequently pays for a LOT! of the contents as : food, furnishings
and "occasionally" (riiiight... ) the rent.
Certainly MOM "helps" to pay the electric, phone, etc., some-to-most of the time.
(While the aforementioned recently (semi)-emancipated offspring reminds Mom
- at any/all given opportunity - that he/she/they are "living on their own now!" )
AND ... the aforementioned (recently)-semi-emancipated offspring
frequently! "shops" (in Mom's home) for: food, (mainly peanut butter (?) furnishings,
linens, PAPER PRODUCTS ! (did they think T.P. was free?!?) - and the odd item of
furniture (items that -amazingly [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ! will go "just perfectly !" in their ! recently
newly-acquired apartment.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Why ? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] What does "living on your own" mean ... to you? (she asked innocently)
knowing the number of recently semi-emancipated offspring you have... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: What does "living on your own"....
Not asking about anyone here. Just wondering if "on your own" means leaving the parents to have a husband who pays all bills.
I am just a little stunned when a 19 year old feels she is adult, on her own and is far more mature... because she is "on her own". To me... she hasn't seen nothing yet and has a long road ahead of her.

It is amazing ! how smart our "elders" become between the time

As Ja'aj put it. One would need to be solely responsible for all your own doings, without help every other day for this or that!

(You just have to live long-enough to know what you
didn't know [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] "then", right?)
Most-all kids need a helping hand now and again.
(and most of 'em don't bite the hand that's helping! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.])
"Some people's kids", as my Mom used to say. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: What does "living on your own"....
It's not easy to move from the shelter of a parents home to the responsibility of the big,bad world out there ,but learn they must !!
My kids were very independent, the only thing ever i was asked for was a recipe for chicken paprika ,easy although one of them was in the habit ,from time to time to be turning up round about meal times, often !

Ya know, I never thought I knew all the answers. I knew a lot of answers, but even back then, I wasn't always sure exactly what questions some of them belonged to.

Tater,
Me either - I came from a family of people who
were very clear about that "sort of thing". [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
(No know-it-alls allowed, boy... )
Ya know... I neverfelt completely "out there" -It not really -
until my Mom died. She was always my secuirty blanket -
and I always knew that.
It felt kinda strange to be ... my age [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ... and suddenly
to be apprehensive about, " [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] What if..."
