What about cursive writing?
Schools debate: Is cursive writing worth teaching?
Are the flowing curves and fancy loops of cursive writing disappearing from elementary school classrooms?
Some fear classic penmanship has been left behind as preparation for state assessment tests dominates class time. Others blame the rise of the Internet, combined with a push to ensure that children are technologically literate, for rendering delicate handwriting an art of yesteryear.
"With all the other subjects we must teach, we just don't have the time to spend a lot of effort on cursive," said Carl Brown, principal of Manatee Elementary in Viera, Fla.

Huh.
Heck if I know... it seems to me that legible should be
the priority and so many people's handwriting - isn't.

Re: What about cursive writing?
From what I am understanding, many feel cursive is not needed. Many feel it's a waste and that computers will take over and you won't need cursive writing. Most likely, parents will need to teach cursive writing at home, if they want their children to learn it.

Question: How are they going to sign their names to anything
if they don't know cursive writing? ... I guess they can just make an "X"

Hiya, Bunny! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Yup. Lots of people did that for centuries.
(I don't much care one way or the other ) - I can "write" - script - and - if I actually
want to be sure someone knows what I said, I print.
As a (proud !, obstinate) leftie - who's alleged teachers did not take that
fact into consideration when teaching me cursive penmanship
~ THE PALMER METHOD ~ Taa-Daaa! - I thought it was a singular
pain in the posterior. Especially those [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] STOOPID concentric circles.
The students today as often as not leave school unable to READ and
do simple math. (Which BTW, kinda negates the computer cash register, I've noticed)
Somehow the importance of cursive seems dim by comparison.
Why not make it an elective? ! I imagine it will be very popular.
I know I could hardly wait! to be able to write as opposed to printing.
At one time I had very attractive penmanship. (Reading backhand is a learned art, BTW)
My job pretty-much put paid to my legible, attractive handwriting. Speed was primary;
as long as I could interpret what I had scribbled everything was great.
(It is also job security.)[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Personally, I'd rather the bring back simple courtesy.
I think students without it ought not to pass from one grade to the next -
much less graduate with ANY! kind of certificate [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
(I wonder if they'll have to import a specialist the teach "Good Manners"?)
I want it to be a required course.

Re: What about cursive writing?
Your answers on Y!A tell me they're still doing it exactly
like they were when I was in grade school.
It's interesting to know that hasn't changed bit.

Re: What about cursive writing?
The problem with the answers from Yahoo is they are from kids who already passed the age for learning cursive. NOW is when they are talking about not teaching cursive anymore.
I will still be teaching cursive here. I find it kind of sad and pathetic that typing is going to just do away with writing.
Anybody care to tell me what people will do when their computers don't work? Typewriters are "SO yesterday!"
I have decided you are all going to suffer through long hand written letters from me. lmao!! AND.... you can't stop me! PLUS... my damn shoulder and arm won't hurt from it.

Re: What about cursive writing?
There is nothing wrong with printing. After all, the idea is to communicate!
Students have long been typing (or having someone else type for them)
papers that are important - so as to -if not earn extra points - at least not
lose any.
Many Teachers / Instructors / Professors / blah-blah require it.
Apparently no one is required to excel at anything any more
except Google and assorted other search engines.
Computers are a fact of school.
No one can do a damned thing! if "the computers are down". [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Various novels about 'after the apocalypse' are starting to
look very possible.
AND... Snookums... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] you don't scare me - I can read ! your
handwriting. You have lovely penmanship.
You possibly should consider this -
I might retaliate...(that is a real threat!) - and I charge for
the code-book. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: What about cursive writing?
Retaliate away! lol Since I can't use the computer as much as I use to, I will definitely be going back to "old" ways of communicating. Besides, a handwritten letter lasts even when the computer is dead or emails go missing.

Re: What about cursive writing?
Well, I have every last letter from you, Ron, Jack and Roxanna. Not one card or letter or object sent is missing. And of course.. all the ones from Tithe. lol
I value them all and have certain spots they get put in.

There are alot of things in Ja'aj's post with which I completely agree!
"There is nothing wrong with printing." ... Yeah! In school, I started doing ALL of my note-taking in print ... so I could actually decipher it later when studying! LOL
"No one can do a damned thing! if "the computers are down" ... OMG! Is THIS ever true! I observed this phenomenon at the hosptial where I worked ... S-C-A-R-Y ... to say the least. COMPUTERS DOWN ... "Well, let's pack-up and go home!" ... And what about the poor patients??? People are becoming "techno-stupid!"

Can I get an "AMEN" for this one?!
The level of rudeness and crassness among the younger generation is sometimes surprising and always rather disgusting. I doubt that many of us would have gotten away with what is seen as commonplace behavior these days. I KNOW that I would NOT have gotten away with it! ... The "ole woodshed" would have been a busy place back then!
