I already knew about this,but the stories I am now reading tell of how many of those workers are getting violent... throwing stones at buildings and attacking trucks..
I will take a look at the petition...

Currently in UK there is a national minimum wage of £6.50ph for over 21s to stop exploitation which, even at that level, is subject to taxation (I nearly said userage). The minimum living wage is somewhat higher (£7.85ph). Meanwhile tax for the super rich has been reduced to 40%. (Pensioners are on the equivilent of £3.25ph)

I understood that the minimum wage over there is $7.25ph.

I want a raise!

The farm workers in question in Mexico (Baja California is in Mexico) are being paid about $8 a day for a 12 hour day.

We are suffering a similar problem over here. Much of Eastern Europe is on 7/8 of not very much. You can see why they all want to come to England! Benefits, top ups, free medical care (useful if your pregnant), subsidised housing, education etc. Some of our employment agencies dont even bother advertising here anymore (something which seems to be impossible to stop!), they just arrange everything for the immigrants at source. Europe insists on free access, so numbers can't be controled. One reason why there is growing support to leave.

Over here, if you're on a low wage, the Government will "top up" your income to ensure that you don't get less than you would if you were unemployed and claiming benefits. You can see the attraction if, like the people you're talking about, you're only on $8 a day (or less!) in an Eastern European EC country. Our politicians grossly underestimated the number of economic immigrants attracted to Britian, hence many of our problems with budget deficits, housing, schools, and hospitals. Not to mention the occaisional riot which few ever get to hear about.

Thank you Roxy! I don't usually post petitions, but this to me just seemed quite exploitative and unfair.
They are paying people $8 a day for a product that sells at retail for $4 a pound. Yet if you go a couple of hundred miles north into the US, the workers have to be paid at least $7.25 per hour for the same job. No wonder workers are trying to come here! Unfortunately there are a lot of abuses here as well, but they still seem a lot better off here. One of the problems is that if they come here illegally, that can be held over their head; their employer may threaten to turn them in to authorities if they cause any problems or complain.

We cant even get rid of the "Hate Preachers". The last terrorist supporter took years to deport and cost the taxpayers about £2M! Human rights and all that. We even try to stop those who want to go to Syria, or fly them back from Turkey if they don't make it across the border.
