The Longfingered Gnome of Doubt

The Longfingered Gnome of Doubt
Well, I guess we all have our doubts about things, and there are some very dark places within us. This is one of my favorites and you have to use your imagination to see this little chap. He would make a great subject for a painting, so vivid! I guess it says a lot about me (and many others). Its a bit of fun, so enjoy, but NOT just before you go to bed.
The Longfingered Gnome of Doubt.
Let me introduce myself
[though I'm sure we've already met],
I am the longfingered gnome of doubt.
I can s q u e e z e under any door,
Climbe down any chimney with my sack of dark secrets.
Walk nimbly on my fingertips
Or right up on tipy toe
Scuttling silently and unseen across your floor on milipede legs,
Creeping stealthily while you look the other way,
Distracted.
I can hide anywhere,
Even in plain sight.
Under any stone,
Behind any tree,
In the dark pools inside your mind,
Beneath your thoughts.
I can wake you in the night
Any time I want,
Sounding like the wind moaning outside.
The sudden "crack",
The squeeky stair.
The unexpected sound, inexplicable.
All me!
Scratching on your glass window with long black dirty nails
On long black dirty fingers.
Like the Devil at his very first music lesson.
Or the demon teacher with unoiled chalk
Writing on your blackboard of life.
You can not hide from me!
I am always watching you
With bright red glowing eyes
From the darkness within.
Through the crack in the wall,
The unfilled hole,
Outside the night darkened payne
(even when we are seven floors up!)
waiting my oportunity to pounce.
I will steal your confidence
(given half a chance).
I will destroy your self respect.
I will set you straight
(in the wrong direction).
I will move you to tears.
I will sow the seeds of uncertanty
In your fertile mind
While you sleep,
Uneasily.
I will empty my dreamcatcher of nightmares
In the path of your wandering mind
As you slumber,
Restlessly.
Then I will hide sleep its self,
Illusive,
Whispering in your ear,
Constantly.
You may have seen me
Out of the corner of your eye
In the dim corridor,
Or felt me watching you,
Or smelled that sweet rich scent I blew into your face
Before I suddenly snatched it away.
You may even have seen me coming,
BUT I DOUBT IT !

Re: The Longfingered Gnome of Doubt
This gets a smile and a lot of appreciation!
You describe it well and in ways I hadn't thought of... and it makes me
see it in a different way, yet familiar ways.

Re: The Longfingered Gnome of Doubt
Our local rag isnt the best forum Im afraid for horror stories, they tend to be more the R&S types and dont catch onto my black humour and subtle double meaning (otherwise known as sarcasm!). The editor seems to like them short, one side of A5 is about the limit (unless shes desperate).
Most of my offerings are a little longer!
I hope you all sleep well, I should add, the gnome snores!
