What is the floral emblem of your state ?
for Sth. Australia it's Sturts Desert Pea. it looks especially striking when you come across it in the desert, just red sand and a mass of green foliage and bright red flowers that look like ...er..mmm...sort of not like flowers !!
connection problem !! wont let me host an image.
it's not y/f it's my connection, will try again later.

Our State Flower is the bluebonnet (a wildflower):
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The Legend of the Bluebonnet
The Texas fields are covered
With a blanket of deep blue.
But for a little Indian girl,
This would not be true.
Texas land was buried and dry,
Rains just would not come.
Indians danced and prayed for rain,
And beat upon their drums.
The Chief made a proclamation.
He appealed to one and all.
A prized possession must be sacrificed
Before the rains would fall.
The Indian camp was silent,
While each person searched his heart.
But when it came to sacrifice,
With possessions they would not part.
Suddenly a little girl stepped forth,
Holding her blue-clad doll.
She placed it in the roaring fire
and raindrops began to fall.
The rain brought forth the grass,
Among its blades, flowers of blue.
To be a sign for all the time
Of a love so pure and true.

State flower... wood violet
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Three other states have adopted the violet as their state flower:
* Illinios (1908)
* Rhode Island (1968)

Re: What is the floral emblem of your state ?
Mountain laurel is more like a shrub or bush than a tree. and I'm not sure if it has a scent; if it does, I'd say it's a very light one. It's closely related to azaleas and camellias, to my understanding. It is very prominent in natural areas here in PA, especially in upland areas which cover a large portion of the state. (I believe that over half of the state is covered by mountains, valleys and forests) Not huge rocky mountains like in Arizona or Colorado. but elevations in the 2000 feet range, mostly covered by deciduous forests in the lower lying areas, and evergreens in the higher ranges.

Re: What is the floral emblem of your state ?
I live in the Delaware Valley, close to the city (actually just barely within the city limits of Philly, but more in a suburban environment than inner city), but less than an hours drive from the closest mountains. It's probably the best of both worlds, close enough to downtown (we call it center city here) to enjoy the history, shopping and nightlife, but far enough away so that traffic isn't too bad, and within a short drive of skiing in the winter at the Poconos, and the Jersey shore (that's what we call the beach, on the Atlantic) in the summer. Both the Mountains and the beach also offer great nature as well, from camping to hiking and the like, and we are also less than a two hour drive from New York City, and maybe a 3 hour drive from Washington DC, our national capital. Yet, we might have as much history, and as many interesting museums as either of them. After all, the U.S. was basically founded here, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence, The Continental Congress, the Constitution, the Liberty Bell,...
