When you are looking to buy a car, truck, etc... what things do you look for and check?

I have all the basic mechanics checked; the braking system, cooling system, exhaust system, charging system, suspension, and most importantly, the drive train, to make sure they engine and transmission are in proper working order.
I also check to make sure there is no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil, as either one can be a sign of a cracked engine block or a blown head gasket. One thing you don't want to have to replace!

I have a mechanic I know check out the engine, compression on each cylinder, like tater said all the above, making sure the block is not cracked. When I looked at a used vehicle I always checked under the vehicle to make sure nothing is leaking, I check the tires, brakes, does it smoke, is the oil clean, and how does it drive. Do the lights work, blinkers work, horn work, but I find it's a lot easier to just buy a new one as I have had so many used cars. There is just one I kept for over 20 years, I loved it, but I put a lot of money into it to keep it rolling.

Another thing about used cars is to listen to the engine, does it make noise or does it purr like it should. You are always going to have to put money at one point into a used car, b ut sometimes you can score a car from an older person who really takes care of their car and those are great deals, grannies car. Especially if it has been stored in a garage, the heater works ,the defroster works, the wipers work, and no leak in any of the hoses that you can see.

You also want to make sure the tranny shifts smoothly, without any hesitation or clunking or jerking.
