Starting a thread to give you a
"Totally Useless Fact Of The Day"
(might come in handy playing Trivial Pursuit!) LOL
Here is today's useless fact:

In the blockbuster hit, E.T., the Extra Terrestrial (1982), Harrison
Ford was cast as the school principal, but his only scene was cut.
Director Steven Spielberg decided his presence in the film would be
too distracting. Ford's wife Melissa Mathison wrote E.T.'s screenplay.

Okay, here's one: The song title, Mr. Mojo Risin", by the Doors, is an anagram of Jim Morrison's name.

In India it is perfectly proper for men to wear pajamas in public.
Pajamas are accepted as standard daytime wearing apparel.

But NOT in the United States, you got that, guys!?

(By the way, cool bit of intormation Tater! Thanks!)

See! ... You guys know some useless facts! LOL
Great additions! I did not know all of that!
Hey, who has that picture of the kitten being held up at gun point?
I lost it. Could have used it here:
The robbery phrase "Hands Up" originated in British Columbia. Bill
Miner, an American known as the Gentleman Bandit, is said to have
first used the phrase while robbing a Canadian Pacific Railways
train in Mission Junction, British Columbia in 1904.
Edit:
And thanks to Breezey's quick fingers ... here's a hold up:

No one knows where the expression "to grin like a Cheshire cat" originated,
but it wasn't with Carroll.
The Cheshire cat is a well-known character in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,
but the expression, meaning a sneering smile that shows the gums,
existed long before he wrote the book. There is no such breed of cat.

It’s in Wales. (Try making that fit on an envelope!)

"Beyond the pale," an expression used to describe outrageous behavior,
originated in Ireland in the 14th century.
The Pale was the area of Ireland under heavy British control.
People living in areas outside it were considered wild and outlandish.

Handfasting is an ancient Celtic custom, once practiced in Ireland and Scotland,
where a bride and groom came together at the start of their marriage.
Their hands (their wrists, actually) were literally tied together.
The term "tying the knot" as a description of getting married traces to this custom.

The term "hillbilly" was first used in America to describe
the immigrants from Northern Ireland, mostly Presbyterian,
who came in the 18th century. The name had been attached to them
back in Ireland since the 1600's, when southern Irish catholics
started calling Protestant supporters of King William "hillbillys" or "billy boys."

Spiral staircases in medieval castles are running clockwise.
This is because all knights used to be right-handed.
When the intruding army would climb the stairs they would not be able to use their right hand
which was holding the sword because of the difficulties of climbing the stairs.
Left-handed knights would have had no troubles, except left-handed people could never become knights because it was assumed that they were descendants of the devil.

The first "Hello" badge used to identify guests

It was on that date that the first Telephone Operators Convention
was held at Niagara Falls and the "Hello" badge was created for that event.
