On a visit to Philadelphia last week, Michelle Obama -- flanked by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner -- [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] the proposed [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], a $400 million government program that will help increase access to healthy food in low-income communities across the nation.

Now, what do you think of this.. AND...what do you think of the idea of cutting the food stamp program to fund this whole thing?

I think it could be a good idea if managed correctly and efficiently, as one big problem in a lot of larger cities is the lack of major grocery stores in the inner city. But I didn't see anything about cutting the food stamp program.

Tater, it is already a possibility that the food stamp program will be cut to pay for Michelle's new idea. Now... HOW is THAT going to help children who already can't afford what they need? Also... does it state anywhere... that Michelle's food will be "affordable" in those low income communities? There are already tons of healthy foods available, for those who can afford them.

Working on this. So far, the cut would have some money put to use on a "teacher bailout"?

House progressives, angered by the continued chipping away of the federal food stamp program as a pay-for in various bills, are taking a stand with the child nutrition bill, which the Senate passed before leaving for their August recess. That bill paid for increases to the federal school lunch program with food stamp cuts, essentially cutting a child’s dinner to pay for their lunch.

Okay, I've been reading up on these issues, and it seems that the "cuts" to the food stamp program aren't really cuts at all, but merely taking away an increase that wasn't scheduled to take effect until 2014.

The healthy foods initiative is mainly about helping finance supermarkets in poor neighborhoods where there currently are none, and most people have to rely on convenience stores that sell mostly prepackaged, processed foods at outrageous prices.

Do you really think low income people will buy what they haven't been able to afford before?
What good is supply, if the targeted people still don't buy it?
Healthy foods shouldn't cost anyone a fortune. People are still going to buy what's cheaper to make a dollar stretch.
I don't think Michelle Obama was ever poor and not had enough... probably doesn't "get" the fact that healthy doesn't mean affordable to many.

It's not about buying food that you couldn't afford before, it's actually the opposite. Example, at a convenience store, you'd probably have to pay about $1.99 for an 8 ounce box of rice-a-roni, instead of buying a 2 pound bag of rice at a supermarket for about the same price.

See, the problem that they are trying to address is that in many inner cities, including the poorest neighborhoods in cities like Philadelphia or Chicago, there are NO supermarkets for miles around. This forces people to pay much higher prices for very limited choices at convenience stores.

Post by Breezey Breezey Fri Nov 05, 2010 12:24 pm

I see a whole lot wrong with it. Many people don't buy real rice nor will they, just because it's offered. Convenience and time.. those things are what many look at.
This also covers schools... schools where kids are forced to take food they know they won't eat... just to keep the funding. The whole thing stinks, when looking at cost, practicality, food waste and cutting even an increase to low income families.
No matter "where" that food is put, it won't be as cheap as other things, especially at a convenience store where prices are outrageous on just about everything.
I think they really need to rethink who will benefit and how.

Okay, maybe many people would still buy rice-a-roni instead of a bag of rice, but at a supermarket, you can get it for about $1.29 instead of 1.99, and have enough left over to buy a couple of bananas.

Breezey, maybe because you don't live in or near a big city, you don't understand the concept that many people do not have access to supermarkets in the inner cities. This bill is mainly trying to address that.

Tater, are they going to build stores or supermarkets for the people or just hope people will sell this food at fair prices?
I use to live quite a ways from a grocery store.. I know what it's like, but if selling these foods at existing places is their answer... it won't fly too well.

They are talking about building grocery stores where there presently are none, which would also bring more jobs to those neighborhoods.

Also, they are not just talking about "health" foods; it is mainly about giving people access to supermarkets.

Okay... just suppose this all right... who legally will own those stores and why is taking away an increase from food stamps the way to do that? In case they haven't been paying attention... more and more people are relying on food stamps because of all the losses of jobs and such.
Why not cut government spending on contracted toilet seats? You can't help the poor or low income by taking away and using it elsewhere.

It's not as simple and "nice" as they'd like us all to believe.

I haven't seen anything saying they are taking away from food stamps to fund this program. The other one you mentioned is a totally different and unrelated program, proposed by congress, which hasn't been passed yet.

And you're right about military contracts; there certainly is a lot of waste and abuse there.

Some progressives are making a claim that this is not actually a cut, that this is somehow just a return to the baseline benefit. But that claim is really preposterous and offensive. The Center for Science in the Public interest, they’re progressive, but they have put that idea forward. If they had a cost of living increase and wage increases over five years, but then we returned them to the salary that they had five years ago, my guess is that they would see that as a cut, rather than a return to the baseline.

Despite heavy [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by the first lady, more than 100 [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] have balked at approving the Senate’s $4.5 billion version of the nutrition bill because it is funded in part with $2.2 billion in cuts to SNAP, the federal food stamp program. They want assurances from the Obama administration that the funding cuts the Senate approved will be restored in the near future.

Tater... I am still looking into this. So far, the funding doesn't seem to be ANYWHERE for that one program, in particular. However... I guarantee you the people with the least will be the ones to somehow pay for it because the Obamas and government officials are NOT going to lose anything they have to make a better world for others.
Hell... I want to be president or a government official so I can spend stupidly and live rent free. Seriously... it's going to cost the little people... not anyone who can "afford" it.

The House will soon consider an $8 billion child-nutrition billthat’s at the center of the first lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative. Beforeleaving for the summer recess, the Senate passed a smaller version of the legislationthat is paid for by trimming the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as the food-stamp program.

Jaaj, I have been trying to explain to Breezey that the healthy food program and the child nutrition bill are two different programs. It's the nutrition bill which they have proposed funding from the food stamp program, and even then, they aren't actually cutting spending on food stamps, they are merely proposing to cut some of the increase in spending on food stamps. That increase in spending came from the stimulus bill, and was only supposed to be temporary in the first place. Basically, they are proposing ending the increase in 2013 instead of 2014, and using the savings for the school lunch program.

The healthy foods program is not using those funds.

Tater, from all I've read and posted... there are two separate programs, but both will get food stamp cut fundings. The "Let's Move" program is definitely one that is supposed to get funding if the food stamps are cut.

Also... how does taking away from the low income to give them more accessible stores... really benefit them? They will have less food money, but more convenience. I don't see the balance there. Healthy food seems to always cost MORE and now.. they will have less food money.

Breezey, maybe you are confusing the name of the program with the purpose, which is to give people the option of going to a grocery store, instead of a convenience store. Grocery store prices are going to be lower, regardless of whether the food you buy is healthy or not. That program doesn't place any restrictions on what kind of food you can buy. Even if you buy junk food, it will still cost less at a grocery store than a convenience store. Plus, it doesn't say anywhere that the healthy food program is going to be funded form food stamp money. Only the child nutrition bill was proposed to be funded from that, NOT the healthy food financing program.

Anyway, they aren't trying to take money away from programs to help the poor, they are trying to figure out the best way to spend money to help the poor and disadvantaged. The republicans are the ones trying to take away from the poor and help the rich.

Okay Tater... they are NOT both the same program, both programs are mentioned for getting funding from the food stamp cut and it's not Obama's fault about the funding part. Are we agreeing, so far? If not, why not?

I find it crappy that no matter what the problem or reason, government seems to always take from the people with the less amount. It's not even for the people, the people lost a lot of say a long time ago.
